The Keyboard

introduction

The Keyboard is organized with black notes grouped in 2s and 3s alternating.

The white note just to the left of a group of 2 black notes is the note ‘C.’

Letter Names of Keys

Each white note is identified by alphabet letter. You can find a note’s letter by counting up or down from C.

Try to identify each white note’s letter name by its position relative to the black notes.

D is between two black notes grouped together.
F is just to the left
of the group of three black notes.
B is just right of the group of three black notes.

Middle C

If not otherwise indicated, middle C is the C in the middle of the keyboard. Often, there isn’t a C in the exact middle, in which case it is the nearest C to the left of the middle, allowing for more treble notes.

The full piano keyboard is 88 keys. There are more than 7 octaves, just over 3 to the left of middle C, and 4 full octaves to the right.

Keyboard to Staff Connection

Letter names of the notes on the staff correspond with letter names of the keys on the keyboard.

Click on the keyboard keys for the notes above. Remember, bass keys are to the left of middle C, and the treble keys are to the right of middle C.
